FYI Safety Score

9.1 Excellent

11 state citations (4 serious, 7 minor) and 7 verified complaints since 2021 across 72 inspections. The most serious substantiated finding involved a staff member who admitted to giving cold showers and verbally threatening 3 memory care residents, resulting in a deficiency citation and the staff member's termination. A 2021 complaint also documented a resident with vascular dementia who left the facility undetected and was unaccounted for overnight before returning the following morning. In August 2025, 2 complaints were filed: one alleging that a staff member grabbed and yanked a resident's arm after the resident vomited, with a subsequent x-ray showing possible fractures, and another alleging that staff failed to seek timely medical evaluation for a resident who was later transferred to hospice care and passed away. Other complaints investigated over the period, including allegations involving sanitation, pest control, resident privacy, and staff conduct, were found unfounded or unsubstantiated.

Why we like it

Atria El Camino Gardens is a 325-bed assisted living and memory care community in Carmichael, making it one of the largest Atria properties in California. The sheer scale means extensive amenities, dedicated wings for different care levels, and a wide range of daily programming.

Located in the same Sacramento suburb as the smaller Atria Carmichael Oaks, El Camino Gardens is the big-campus option for families who want maximum variety and resources.

  • Priced below the California average

Starting at $3,295/month, facility-verified. Atria's own site cites California's assisted living average at $5,900/month — a meaningful gap.

  • Three care levels on one campus

Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Memory Care are all offered on-site. Residents whose needs increase may not have to relocate to a different community.

  • Steps from the American River corridor

A few blocks from the American River; Ancil Hoffman Park — featuring a riverside golf course and nature center — is nearby.

  • Veterans credit and benefit navigation

Atria offers a $1,000 Welcome Home credit to veterans, applicable toward rent or moving costs. Staff assist with VA Aid & Attendance pension applications.

  • Base rate excludes care fees

The stated starting price does not include care services or medication management, which are billed separately. Ask for a care-level cost estimate alongside the room rate.

  • 325-bed campus scale

At 325 beds, this is one of the larger assisted living campuses in the Sacramento area. Families who prefer a smaller, residential-scale setting should weigh the size.

  • Memory care is a separate secured area

Memory care operates in a distinct secured neighborhood apart from assisted living. A resident transitioning between care levels will move to a different section of the campus.

  • Operated by a national chain

Atria Senior Living is a large national corporation. Families who prefer locally-owned or independently-operated communities should factor this into their decision.
